Frequently Asked questions

What is DIM?

DIM, short for diindolylmethane, is a phytochemical found in cruciferous vegetables. It metabolizes from the compound indole-3-carbinol and is stored throughout our bodies, including our liver, kidneys, brain, lungs, heart, and blood plasma.

DIM came under examination when scientists concluded that individuals who ate a diet higher in cruciferous vegetables had a lower incidence of many types of cancer, including breast and prostate cancer.

Does DIM have any side effects?

DIM is well tolerated by many people, though it does come with the possibility of a few side effects such as fatigue, brain fog, and dark urine.

The most commonly experienced side effect is a headache, which is more common in women than in men, and it can be pretty uncomfortable. Although other side effects are generally mild, the headaches can vary in severity and, for some women, are quite debilitating. To combat this side effect, decrease your dosage to half per day and work your way up, skipping a day if necessary. Taking the supplement with a meal and drinking a lot of water also helps. Headaches are thought to be a detox reaction, both from toxins in the body and excess estrogen being released and changing hormone levels. Drinking a lot of water can help flush toxins from the body more effectively. Other supplements such as activated charcoal and milk thistle may ease the transition by binding to toxins, aiding the body in their removal, and supporting the liver in its detox functions. If you develop a headache as a side effect, it will go away within a few days, and it is not a permanent fixture during DIM supplementation.

Does NutriRise DIM contain any ingredients to increase absorption?
Yes! Our supplement also contains 2.5 mg of BioPerine, a patented black pepper extract added for its unique ability to enhance the bioavailability and fully utilize DIM. It's been used for more than 20 years, and research studies show that it increases bioavailability by up to 30%. It does this in a few ways, including modifying the enzymes necessary to metabolize the nutrients and inducing thermogenesis, producing heat, and enhancing nutrient absorption.

What is DIM used for?

DIM’s benefits primarily include hormonal balancing and detoxification. Balancing hormones is vital for good health. Ready to feel like the best version of yourself? DIM is a phytochemical that can help to regulate your hormones, particularly estrogen. Research also shows it may open detox pathways. DIM does this in several different ways:

  • DIM blocks androgen receptors, blocking testosterone’s ability to bind to these receptors.
  • DIM helps encourage estrogen to metabolize into the gentle, “good” form of estrogen known as 2OHE1 instead of 16OHE1, the more aggressive, problem-causing form of estrogen, by opening the specific pathways needed for 2OHE1’s metabolism.
  • DIM opens detoxification pathways by influencing specific receptors to activate, telling the body to create the enzymes necessary for detoxification.

If you suffer from hot flashes, night sweats, hormonal acne, premenstrual disorders, or anything similar, DIM may be able to help decrease these symptoms by supporting balanced hormone levels.

Can DIM help me lose weight?
Hormonal imbalance and estrogen dominance are often the cause of weight gain and weight loss difficulty. Peri-menopausal women, in particular, experience this troubling and highly frustrating condition. With obesity at an all-time high, understanding the role of hormones in the weight dilemma is vital! Estrogen helps regulate metabolism, so if it is low, metabolism follows. When it is high, the body has a hard time shedding toxins. As a result, it’s more difficult to decrease body fat because toxins are stored in our fat cells. Research studies indicate that DIM supports healthy estrogen and in turn, assists hormone-related weight management.

Is it better to take DIM in the morning or at night?
The best time to take DIM is whenever you remember to take it. Consistency is key. If it’s easier for you to remember to take it in the morning with your coffee, then that’s the best time. If it’s easier for you to remember to take it at night right before bed, then stick with nightly doses. Just remember to be consistent. DIM works best when it is taken around the same time every day. It helps to maintain constant levels in your bloodstream for best results.

How long does it take DIM to start working?
Depending on your reason for taking DIM, it could take a couple of days to a whole month to give you results. DIM helps to balance your hormone levels and remove toxins from your body. Each woman’s body is different, and so are hormone levels. Depending on the severity of the imbalance, it could take a longer or a shorter time to give you physical results. We recommend at least 30 days of consistent use. For those with more severe hormonal imbalance, completing a full 60 days (1 bottle) will give you a more accurate picture of what DIM can do for you.

Does DIM change the color of your urine?
Although it’s not common, it is possible to experience a change in your urine color while taking DIM. The natural metabolites of DIM have a brown/amber color that can transfer to your urine. This may cause your urine to take on more of an orange appearance. The same thing happens in people who eat a large amount of cruciferous vegetables daily. It is not harmful at all. Just make sure to stay hydrated, as DIM helps your body detox more efficiently. Dehydration can make detoxification more difficult.

  • Fatigue
  • Headaches
  • Cold hands and feet
  • Mood swings
  • Anxiety
  • Memory problems
  • Difficulty sleeping

What causes high levels of estrogen?

High estrogen levels, creating a state of estrogen dominance, happen for many reasons. Certain medications increase estrogen levels, including estrogen replacement therapy, often prescribed to women entering menopause. Other causes of high estrogen levels include:

  • Hormonal contraceptives
  • Some herbal remedies
  • Some antibiotics
  • Obesity
  • Liver disease
  • Ovarian tumors
  • Xenoestrogens in our environment, toxins, and chemicals that mimic estrogen in our bodies and disrupt our endocrine system

Although not widely agreed upon in the medical world, estrogen dominance does occur, but the exact reason is unclear. We once believed that every estrogen dominant woman had low progesterone levels, but further research found that was not the case. So many things may cause a rise in estrogen levels, whether an environmental factor, something in your diet or a lifestyle factor. The underlying question is whether a lack of adequate progesterone causes estrogen dominance to counteract it, but every woman is unique. Having hormone levels checked by a medical professional is the only way to understand your body chemistry.

What are the symptoms of hormone imbalance?

Symptoms of hormone imbalance occur at any time in life, from the teenage years onwards. Many health conditions have an underlying component of hormonal imbalance. Too often, the symptoms are the focus instead of the real problem. DIM may be able to help with the following:

  • Hot flashes and night sweats
  • Acne, including painful cystic acne
  • Mood swings
  • Difficulty losing weight
  • Stubborn belly fat
  • Fatigue
  • Difficulty sleeping
  • Headaches
  • Memory problems
  • Hair loss
  • PMS symptoms

When hormone levels are in check, with more “good” estrogen than “bad,” progesterone and testosterone levels where they should be, our bodies return to a state of homeostasis or balance. It no longer rages against us in the form of night sweats, fatigue, hot flashes, headaches, or mood disturbances. Our bodies have an easier time shedding excess weight and maintaining a healthy weight. Hormones regulate our bodies, so it's easy to see that it translates throughout our entire body when they’re unbalanced! In essence, regulate your hormones, and you will regulate everything else.
