While current Good Manufacturing Practices (cGMPs) recommended by the FDA cover the bare minimum guidelines that supplements must adhere to before they can be approved for sale, the potential for a supplement to trigger an unexpected reaction, as in the case of allergens, is still high. At NutriRise, we understand that dietary supplements, such as those sourced from foods can cause allergic reactions because they either consist of ingredients derived from high-risk allergenic foods, such as soy lecithin or due to cross-contamination from encounter with allergenic ingredients during the manufacturing process. For that simple reason, although it is not mandated by the FDA, we test each and every lot of raw materials and finished products to ensure they are 100% allergen-free before they are brought to the market.

Allergen Testing And Labelling Initiative At NutriRise

Allergen labeling prerequisites only apply to foods regulated by the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) under the Federal Food, Drug, & Cosmetics Act, according to the Food Allergen Labeling and Consumer Protection Act (FALCPA). What does this imply? Basically, it is not mandatory for the manufacturers of dietary ingredients and supplements to list allergens that may be present in the supplement nor are they required to provide any statutory warnings regarding the potential for allergic reactions from consuming the supplement.

According to research, approximately 50% of the US population takes one or more supplements and ingredients derived from high-risk allergenic foods are typically present either as an active ingredient or as an additive in dietary supplements.
